Generality

Jasmine polyanthum is part of the large family represented by the Oleaceae: we are talking about a son-in-law that includes more than three hundred species, among which we can also find climbing shrub species, as well as those with deciduous and rustic leaves.

It is a climbing plant that comes from the Middle East, but also from the southern part of the American continent.

Jasmine polyanthum is characterized by having extremely thin stems, with a classic climbing habit or, in some cases, even drooping.

These climbers have the peculiarity of having particularly large compound leaves, with a typical dark green color, rather intense.

During the spring season, just where the leaf axil is located, racemes develop which are formed by different star-shaped flowers, which have a typical white color, in some cases also integrated by some veins of pink.

One of the main characteristics of Jasmine polyanthum flowers is undoubtedly that of presenting an intense scent.

Following the flowering phase, it must be emphasized that trimming of the stems is also possible: the goal is certainly to allow the plant to enjoy the best possible growth.

Exposure

It is a climbing plant that must be grown in all those areas that are particularly bright and beaten by the sun's rays; it is also essential that they be planted in a place that is as sheltered as possible from the wind.

In most cases, in all those areas that lend particularly cold temperatures, the advice is to cultivate this type of plants within decidedly protected areas.

It is important to cultivate these plants in sheltered places within zones where the minimum temperatures drop below -5 degrees centigrade.

During the autumn season, it is advisable to provide adequate shelter to the foot of the plant, especially with the use of dry leaves, to ensure that the substrate does not freeze in depth.

Watering

This climbing plant must be watered with good consistency, especially in that period between the moment in which the transplant takes place and once, instead, that the engraftment has occurred.

During the rest of the year, watering must never be too abundant.

Jasmine is able to withstand even particularly prolonged periods of drought fairly well.

During the spring season, especially in those periods characterized by rather high aridity, the advice is to appropriately stimulate the flowering, by means of watering that is not too frequent, but constant.

Ground

Although jasmines have an appearance that might lead you to think they are delicate plants, they actually have no problem growing on any type of substrate.

In any case, this climbing plant is characterized by having a particular predilection for all those soils rather rich in organic substance, soft and with an excellent level of drainage, in such a way that the danger linked to the formation of water stagnations can be avoided.

Multiplication

This practice can be carried out after having extracted cuttings of a length of at least eight centimeters (up to a maximum of 10 cm) from bearing branches or which have not yet reached complete maturity.

The cuttings must subsequently be inserted inside an appropriate multiplication box, only after having inserted a compound formed by sand and peat.

Once the cuttings have taken root, you will have to proceed with the transfer of the seedlings into pots with a larger diameter.

The multiplication can also be carried out by extracting those shoots that develop right at the base of the plant, once the latter has become an adult.

Variety

Among the main varieties, we can certainly underline the presence of Jasminum officinale, which is characterized by having deciduous leaves, while flowering generally occurs during the period between June and October.

Jasmine (Jasminum polyanthum): pests and diseases

As far as parasites and diseases are concerned, we must emphasize that the most frequent dangers for jasmine are aphids and scale insects.

In any case, these are annoying parasites, which attack above all those plants of jasmine polyanthum which are grown in sheltered areas.

We must not forget, in the same way, how another important danger for this climbing plant derives essentially from the presence of water stagnation: it is quite easy to understand that, with a well-drained soil available, it will also be possible to avoid the formation of excessive humidity. .

It is precisely the high humidity that could cause the rapid formation of gray mold, especially during the period in which the vegetative restart takes place.

The first to bloom, Jasminum polyanthum

It is the first of the jasmines to bloom, reminding us that spring is beginning. Its scent floods the air, arriving unexpectedly at the first breath of wind. Those who come to us in the spring, between March and April, always notice, or rather it is their nose that warns them, of this sweet scent and look around in search of the author.

It is Jasminum polyanthum, traditionally called "marzolino", precisely because it is the first to bloom in early spring. Among the jasmines it is one of the most generous of flowers, in a month it is completely covered with flowers, becoming completely white, a flowery wall. In our jasmine garden he created some very suggestive views in the space of a few years. He climbed a railing to surround the countryside 'rasola' that leads up to the house. And yet he cunningly climbed on the branches of the lemons, blooming between the orange blossom and the lemon fruits. And finally he filled a flowerbed forming a flowery carpet. With a fast and generous growth, the polyanthum lends itself to becoming a dense and well-structured hedge, very well manageable, which in a few years can take on a very specific shape. It will bloom only the first two months of spring, but with a breathtaking flowering, not comparable with any other jasmine and perhaps, absolutely, with no other climber. You can see it from afar, very flowery, it never escapes sight and we find it in all Italian regions. It is in fact a very rustic jasmine and also suitable for the harsh climates of northern Italy.

There are two polyanthums that are part of our collection: the J. polyanthum , normally with white flowers, slightly pink in bud, and the j. polyanthum rubrum which, as the name suggests, has a darker, intense red bud that contrasts beautifully with the intense green foliage.

So here are some photos of this generous plant that is part of the traditional Italian landscape.

Pallet-planters

Another way can be to recover gods wooden pallet to be installed vertically and transformed into planters! We have already seen that pallets are a very modern and appreciated solution also for paving the garden in an economic way or for furnishing its relaxation area in an ecological way, thanks to recycling, creating DIY furniture.

Once the necessary pallets have been recovered, depending on the size of our wall, they must be placed vertically and "close" the lower side of what will be the compartments for our plants. This step can be done with various different materials: wood, wire mesh ... the important thing is that they are resistant and well fixed!

At this point you can decide if paint your pallets with a wood varnish of the color you prefer, or leave them natural and spread with a brush a product that protects the wood from atmospheric agents.
The next step is to put the stop at the wall, taking the appropriate measures: the pallets will be fixed with screws in the vertical wooden planks. The important thing is that at least two of the four axes are fixed.

Now everything is ready: all that remains is to cover the inside of the compartments and then put the earth and flowers in them. You can do this with whatever you prefer, as long as it has holes in the lower part for the water to drain. If you like, you can too paint the horizontal boards (so those between which the plants are placed) with blackboard paint, so you can write on them the names of the species you have planted!

Jasmine or jasminum, the species and the FALSE

True jasmine, that is the plants belonging to the genus Jasminum, they can be broken down according to their resistance to cold in three groups: delicate, semi-rustic and rustic. So it is important to choose the species that best suits the climate of your region, it being understood that not all jasmines are white and fragrant, and it may happen that you have to opt, for climatic reasons, for the yellow and odorless ones.

I gelsomini delicati

I gelsomini semirustici

I gelsomini rustici

I falsi gelsomini

In alcuni paesi, in particolare in Marocco e Tunisia, offrire gelsomino bianco significa "Io scelgo te".
